By the way, as I told you before, I belong to "The Beatles Club" at University. We listen to The Beatles songs and perform the songs in the club.
Since The Beatles is a world-famous band, exchange students often join our club!!
I have made friends with Australian, Russian, Finn, Swedish, Filipino, Italian, and so forth. It is very exciting for me to talk about music with them. In spite of our cultural difference, we can share values through music. We can cross the border with music! (and a little English) I will never forget this experience.
Of course, I also can improve my English skill by communicating with them. Let me ask you a question. What do you say when you want to ask people from abroad why they came to Japan? Maybe, many of you will say "Why did you come to Japan?". I thought so, too. However, an Italian friend of mine told me that the expression is not so good. Can you guess why? She said "That expression is somewhat cold. I get kinda feeling that I should not be here." Yes, "why" contains accusing implication. I think this is true of Japanese. Then, what expression can we use in that situation? The answer is "What brings you to Japan?". This is neutral, so you do not hurt the person you are talking to. You have to care about not only grammar but also nuances when you communicate with person in a foreign language.
You can learn a lot by talking with people overseas. I recommend you actively talk to exchange students after you enter the university.
